Hoffman Estates is a relatively new Village in Illinois. The history of Hoffman Estates began in 1954 when a local farmer sold 160 acres of farmland to Sam and Jack Hoffman. Sam and Jack Hoffman owned the Father and Son Construction Company. The land was located east of Roselle Road between Golf and Higgins. The Hoffman brothers began to build single-family homes. The first families moved into the new homes in late-1955. The homes were built on half-acre lots of land and were sold for $14,500 each. The Hoffman Brothers were accepting down-payments as low as $700 to begin construction. The new, and affordable construction started to attract residents to the area. In 1959, the residents of Hoffman Estates incorporated the Village. At the time that Hoffman Estates was incorporated, its population was about 8,000 people.

In 1962 the first land north of the tollway was annexed to the Village of Hoffman Estates. The annexation of the land north of the tollway more than doubled the size of Hoffman Estates.

In 1980 many new small office buildings were built in Hoffman Estates. In 1991 Ameritech opened its regional headquarters in Hoffman Estates. The next year, Sears Roebuck and Company moved its headquarters from the iconic Sears Tower in the Chicago Loop, into the Prairie Stone Business Park in western Hoffman Estates. The Prairie Stone Business Park has more than 800 acres of office space, research facilities, and high-tech industrial use. Beginning in the late 1980s, Hoffman Estates started moving away from being a primarily residential community to becoming a large Commercial Center.

Today, Hoffman Estates has a population of well over 51,000 people. The total incorporated land area of Hoffman Estates is over 19 square miles. The Village of Hoffman Estates is a thriving community that has won 16 Governor’s Hometown Awards for its innovative community programs.
