Naperville has a total population of about 142,000 people making it the fifth largest city in Illinois
Naperville is named after Joseph Naper, the first settlor in Naperville. Joseph Naper arrived on the west bank of the DuPage River in 1831 in a ship that had traveled across the Great Lakes in a 2-month voyage. When Joseph Naper arrived in the area he established Naper’s Settlement. Naper colonized the area along with several other families that were along for the voyage. By 1832 over 100 people lived at Naper’s Settlement. After the Indian Creek Massacre during the Black Hawk War, the settlers were moved to Fort Dearborn for their protection. A fort was built at Naper’s Settlement and the settlers returned. The Indians never attacked Naper’s Settlement.
In 1839 DuPage County was formed from Cook County and Naper’s Settlement became the DuPage County Seat. Naper’s Settlement became the Village of Naperville in 1857. By that time, it had a population of 2000. Naperville remained the DuPage County Seat until 1868 when the Illinois Legislature changed DuPage County Seat to Wheaton.
Naperville’s population began exploding in the 1960’s. The population explosion continued well into the 1990s. A main reason for the population explosion in Naperville was the construction of the East-West Tollway and Interstate 355. Since the construction of those tollways, the population of Naperville has nearly quadrupled.
Today, Naperville remains a vibrant and diverse community in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Naperville Public Library has been rated number one in the United States from 1999 through 2010.
