Eventually, East Aurora and West Aurora were formed.In 1857, the two towns were combined into what is now known as Aurora. Soon after Aurora was incorporated, heavy industries moved into the area. Immigrants from Europe flocked to the area to fill the plentiful manufacturing and industrial jobs. Aurora became the economic engine of the Fox Valley region. The economic growth in Aurora continued until the early 1970’s when the railroad shops closed and industrial plants and facilities started to leave Aurora. By the 1980’s the unemployment rate in Aurora reached 16%. Street gangs started to form and the crime rate in Aurora rose drastically. By the late 1980s, several Business and Industrial Parks were developed in Aurora which helped lead to an economic revival. In 1993, the Hollywood Casino was built on the Fox River in downtown Aurora. The Hollywood Casino brought new construction and development to the downtown area in Aurora. It was around this time that the population in Aurora swelled and numerous residential subdivisions were built.
