The land, which now makes up Barrington, was originally inhabited by local Indian tribes. Many of the major local roads in Barrington, such as Algonquin Road, Rand Road, Higgins Road, and St. Charles Road, were originally trails used by the local Indian tribes which inhabited the land that now makes up Barrington. After the treaty of 1833 ending the Black Hawk War, the Indian tribes gave up the land west of the shores of Lake Michigan. After this treaty was signed, settlers started moving into the area. From 1833 to 1835, the United States government paid over $100,000 to various Indian tribes to buy their land. The first white settlers in the area arrived in 1834 from New York. They were followed by more settlers from Vermont and New York. The original settlers moved into the area that is now the intersections of Route 68 and Sutton Road. This area was originally called Miller Cove. The area was named Barrington after Great Barrington in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. This was where many of the original settlers of Barrington came from.
By 1863 the population of Berrington had grown to 300 residents. In 1865, the Illinois Legislature officially named Barrington an Incorporated Village in the State of Illinois. In 1889, the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway was built through Barrington. A few years later several fires caused serious damage to many of the buildings in downtown Berrington.
Barrington gained national notoriety on November 27th 1934 when Baby Face Nelson was involved in a running gun battle with FBI agents in Barrington. Baby Face Nelson escaped even though he had been shot nine times. Nelson shot and killed two FBI agents in the gun battle. Later that evening, Baby Face Nelson died and his body was dumped in a cemetery in Skokie, Illinois. Baby Face Nelson holds the record for killing more FBI agents than anyone. A plaque located in Langendorf Park in Berrington, commemorates the killing of the FBI agents.
In 2015, Barrington celebrated it’s 150th Anniversary. Barrington has come a long way from being an Indian Trail to being one of the nation’s wealthiest communities.
