Hanover Park is an Illinois village that is located about 27 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop. Hanover Park is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Hanover Park is located in Cook County and in DuPage County. Hanover Park was incorporated on August 14, 1958.
In 1872, Edwin Bartlett donated more than seven acres of property for the construction of a train depot, in what is now Hanover Park. By 1874 Bartlett began making plans to build a Village around the area surrounding the train depot. The town was originally named Ontarioville. By the 1880’s the population of Ontarioville began to grow as new homes were built in Bartlett subdivision. The train depot allowed the residents of Ontarioville to reach far beyond the area by train.
By 1920 the population of Ontarioville was 250. Lake Street was built but a bypass went under the railroad tracks and diverted traffic away from the older parts of town in DuPage County. Development lagged in the Cook County portion of Ontarioville until 1925, when a new subdivision was built in Ontarioville. Many people put down deposits for new homes. By the time of the Great Depression, only a few homes had been built. In 1947, the developers of this new subdivision left town with the down payment deposits for the new homes. This caused growth in Ontarioville to grind to a halt. By 1955, Ontarioville was taken off the train schedule as a scheduled stop because of the drop in the number of commuters.
Meanwhile, nearby Streamwood was expanding rapidly. The residents of the Cook County portion of Ontarioville became concerned that Streamwood would annex Ontarioville. In 1858, the residents of Ontarioville incorporated as Hanover Park. They incorporated out of fear that Streamwood would encroach on their land. Shortly after Hanover Park was incorporated, the village established its own realty firm which began building single family homes in Hanover Park. The village also annexed commercial property for development in the DuPage County portion of Hanover Park.
By 1970 the population of Hanover Park began to boom. The Tradewinds Shopping Center was built on the northeast corner of Irving Park Road and Barrington Road. A large portion of land in the DuPage County portion of Hanover Park was annexed. By 1970 the population of Hanover Park was 11,916. By 1990, the population had almost tripled to approximately 33,000. Currently, the dividing line between the Cook County portion and DuPage County portion of Hanover Park is defined by the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway.
