Niles is an Illinois village that is located in the in northern Cook County. Niles is on the northwest border of the City of Chicago. The Village of Niles has a current population of approximately 30,000 people. Niles was named an “All-American City” in 1964. Niles was settled in 1827 and 1831 when two settlers came to the area. It was originally called “Dutchman’s Point” for the German immigrants who came to the settlement. The original settlers came to the area looking to settle in Chicago. However, they found the land in Chicago to be too swampy for farming so they laid claim to 80 acres of land around Milwaukee and Harlem Avenue.
The Village of Niles was formerly Incorporated on August 24, 1899. At the time of its incorporation, Niles only had a population of 500 people. Niles took its name after Niles Township, most of the surrounding suburbs, such as Niles and Glenview, are part of Niles Township. Nobody really knows where the name Niles came from. Growth population in Niles grew substantially in the 1950’s when World War II and Korean War veterans returned to the area and set up homes in Niles. Since Niles did not have a train stop from Chicago, residents of Niles had to travel to Park Ridge or Glenview to connect to the train to Chicago.
Niles is known for the leaning tower of Niles, a small replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the bell tower located next to a cathedral in the Italian City of Pisa. The Leaning Tower of Niles is unique to Niles and is located on a busy stretch of Touhy Avenue.
Most of the residents of Niles own their own homes. Niles has a suburban feel to it but it’s close proximity to Chicago gives it a unique urban flavor. Niles is known for its highly rated public elementary and high schools. Niles has some of the best rated high schools in the area.
Niles Criminal Cases
Since Niles is located in the northern suburbs of Cook County, it is part of the Cook County Judicial Circuit, the largest Judicial Circuit Court in the State of Illinois and one of the largest unified court systems in the United States. Cook County divides its Courts into 6 Municipal Districts encompassing the geographic area that the Municipal District Court is located. Niles is in the Second Municipal District Court. The Second Municipal District Court is located on Old Orchard Road in Skokie. All Niles criminal cases are assigned to the Second Municipal District Court on Old Orchard Road in Skokie. Criminal cases in Skokie, Park Ridge, Glenview, and DesPlaines are also in the Second Municipal District in Skokie.
If you are arrested for a felony in Niles, you will be brought to Bond Court at the Old Orchard Courthouse in Room 105 at 1:30 pm. All Niles Bond Court cases are in Room 105, Monday through Friday. You will be released from the Skokie Courthouse after Bond Court if you post Bond after Bond Court. If you do not post Bond after Bond Court, the Cook County Sheriff will put you on a bus and take you to Cook County Jail at 26th and California in Chicago. You will remain in Cook County Jail until Bond is posted or your case is finished. All future Court dates will be at the Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie.
If you are arrested by the Niles Police on a Court holiday or on a weekend, they will take you to Central Bond Court in Room 100 at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 26th and California in Chicago for your Bond Hearing. Weekend and Holiday Bond Court are at 1:30. If you post Bond after Bond Court, you will be released from 26th and California. If you do not post Bond after Bond Court, you will be turned over to the custody of the Cook County Sheriff and you will be taken next door to the Cook County Jail.
All Niles felony cases start in Room 105 in the Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie. After your Bond Hearing, your first court date will be for a Preliminary Hearing. All Preliminary Hearings are in Room 105 at the Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie. After your preliminary hearing, if the judge finds probable cause or you are indicted by a grand jury, the judge in room 105 will assign your case to one of the felony Court rooms throughout the first and second floor of the Old Orchard courthouse in Skokie. Some of the felony Courtrooms in Skokie only handle felony cases from the City of Chicago. It is very common to see Chicago Police officers inside the Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie.
