During the 1920s, a real estate boom brought numerous 2 and 3 flat apartment buildings to Skokie along with the Chicago style bungalow homes. Development of residential buildings ended once the Great Depression of 1929 hit. In the 1940s and 50s, families started moving out of Chicago and settling in Skokie. This led to large scale commercial developments. One notable such development was the Old Orchard Shopping Center which is currently called Westfield Old Orchard.

Skokie’s close proximity to Chicago makes Skokie an importance community in the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Skokie has a strong manufacturing and retail base of commerce. The largest employer in Skokie is the NorthShore University HealthSystem. The CTA yellow line ends at the Dempster Street Station in Skokie. The yellow line was recently extended to Oakton Street to serve Skokie’s downtown and connect Skokie with Chicago’s Loop. Plans are underway to extend the yellow line further to Old Orchard Mall. In addition to the CTA trains, Skokie is also accessible by way of PACE and CTA buses. Interstate 94, known as the Edens Expressway, allows motorists to access Chicago by way of a modern highway.

Skokie is part of the Cook County Judicial Circuit. The Cook County Judicial Circuit is the largest Judicial Court System in Illinois and one of the largest unified court systems in the world. Skokie is the home of the Old Orchard Courthouse which is located on Old Orchard Road, just off of the exit at the Edens Expressway. The Old Orchard Courthouse is the 2nd District Courthouse in Cook County.

The 2nd Municipal District Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie is where the following municipalities in the northern suburbs of Cook County have their criminal cases: Deerfield, Des Plaines, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Golf, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northbrook, Northfield, Park Ridge, Skokie, Wilmette, Winnetka, and the Townships of Evanston, Maine, New Trier, Niles, and Northfield.

Bond Court at the Old Orchard Courthouse is at 1:30 p.m. in Room 105, Monday through Friday. If Bond is posted at the Old Orchard Courthouse, you will be released from Skokie. If Bond is not posted immediately in Skokie, you’ll be sent to Cook County Jail at 26th and California in Chicago. Bond Court for Skokie Bond Hearings on weekends and holidays is at 1:30 p.m. in Room 100 of the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 26th and California, next to the Cook County Jail, in Chicago. So, if you are arrested in Skokie or in any other community served by the Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie on the weekend or on a holiday, the local police will take you to Central Bond Court in Room 100 of the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 26th and California for your Bond Hearing. However, your criminal case will be held at the Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie.

Skokie Domestic Battery and Skokie Aggravated Domestic Battery Cases are heard in Room 106 of the Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie. Most Skokie Domestic Battery and Aggravated Domestic Battery cases are at 9:30 a.m. Room 106 in the Old Orchard Courthouse in Skokie. Room 106 is a dedicated Domestic Violence courtroom for all Skokie Domestic Battery cases.
