A few years later, the name was changed to St. Charles. Saint Charles officially became a city in 1839 and was incorporated under the Illinois Constitution in 1874.

In its early days, St. Charles was a very isolated place. St. Charles was approximately 3 days away from Chicago. The Fox River was not able to be used by large boats. St. Charles became a center for the slave-era Underground Railroad. There were several tunnels and false doorways in the town. An abolitionist group was founded in St. Charles in 1842. It is believed that a building used by a local blacksmith was a hub for the Underground Railroad. A local restaurant has been named in honor of that blacksmith.

During the 1840s and 1850s, European Immigrants from Ireland and Sweden settled in St. Charles. By 1850, 2,132 European immigrants called Saint Charles their home. There currently is a very large immigrant population living in St. Charles.

The Kane County Courthouse is located in St. Charles at 37W775 Illinois 38 (Roosevelt Road). The court complex is located Southwest of the intersection of Randall Road and Illinois 38. The complex contains the Kane County Jail, the Kane County Juvenile Court Building, and the offices of the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Kane County Public Defender’s Office. The Kane County Clerk of the Circuit Court’s Office is located approximately a mile away on Randall Road in St. Charles.

St. Charles Criminal Cases

St. Charles is in Kane County, which is part of the 16th Judicial Circuit. All St. Charles criminal cases are heard at the Kane County Judicial Center. St. Charles felony cases are heard on the third floor of the building. Most misdemeanor St. Charles Kane County criminal cases are heard on the second floor of the building.
