St. Charles became a center for the slave-era Underground Railroad. There were several tunnels and false doorways in the town. An abolitionist group was founded in St. Charles in 1842. It is believed that a building used by a local blacksmith was a hub for the Underground Railroad. A local restaurant has been named in honor of that blacksmith.
During the 1840s and 1850s, European Immigrants from Ireland and Sweden settled in St. Charles. By 1850, 2,132 European immigrants called Saint Charles their home. There currently is a very large immigrant population living in St. Charles.
The Kane County Courthouse is located in St. Charles at 37W775 Illinois 38 (Roosevelt Road). The court complex is located Southwest of the intersection of Randall Road and Illinois 38.
